Big, relevant keyword lists are the key to getting as many people to your site as possible. Here's a quick guide on squeezing every last possible keyword phrase out of your keyword list.
5 Killer Tips For Building Monster Lists

Use plurals and singular
It's amazing how many people miss this obvious little tip. If you have 'tennis shoes' in your keyword list, include 'tennis shoe'. If you have 'dog collar', include 'dog collars'. Do this on EVERY word possible. Doing this alone can seriously expand your list of keywords. |

Leave your tool running and take a break
More on this further down the page, but most keyword tools will take some time to dig out long keyphrase lists. Set thing up, punch in the starting words and then leave it to work it's magic. Use that as your starting point and see if YOU can expand the list further, using plurals, mixing up the order of the words and so on.
Extra tip: You should also include the following in any keyword lists you make: • Keywords with the spaces taken out. eg. dogcollar • Product models, numbers and makes • Your web address www.yourdomain.com • Names of competing products that do the same job |

Use a thesaurus!
If you think you've expanded your keyword list as much as you can, try using the thesaurus (like the one mentioned in my free tools section). One word can have many different ways of saying it and your customers will be using all of them. Some will search for 'internet' others will search for 'web', 'online' and so forth.
Extra tip: Think like your customer. They WON'T use industry jargon like you do. Ask your friends and family what they'd search for in order to find a product like yours. You might be surprised! |

Use misspellings
Most people overlook misspellings or don't know which ones their surfers are using. Adding misspelled keywords to your list can make for big money because your competition are likely missing them. Both Keywords Analyzer and Keyword Elite generate misspellings for you.

WARNING: Keep your monster under control
Don't forget that you want to build up exhaustive keyword lists but you also want them to be RELEVANT. Make sure you use both negative keywords to filter out words you don't want in your list, as well as pruning and removing words that aren't relevant to your website by hand. Don't JUST go for size. Quality counts too!
Extra tip: DON'T use capitalization as a variation. 'Contact Lenses' is seen as the same as 'contact lenses' so you only need the lower case version on your keyword list. |
| 1) Start Keywords Analyzer up. And, if you haven't got one already, create a shortcut on your desktop for this software. | ![]() |
| 2) Now we're going to click on Advanced Search. This is the more thorough of Keywords Analyzer's research tools. It takes longer to run but brings back stacks of great keywords. | ![]() |
| 3) In this box list one or more keyphrases you're going to research. I'd suggest just putting one keyword in there for now. and keeping it very broad. The overall keyword that applies to your market. | ![]() |
| 4) Next look below that box and set the 'Dig up to level' and the 'Min. searches for digging' both to 5. I find this is a good number for each to find a lot of good keyphrases that people are searching for. | ![]() |
| 5) Now hit the play button. | |
| 6) You're not done yet! One of the real strengths with this tool is that you can run multiple advanced searches at a time, thanks to this handy tabbed interface. Go back to step 2 and put in another keyphrase. Do this a number of times. And try a more specific keyphrase this time. Here I've chosen car insurance.
Now you can go and make a coffee! Let the software run and it will build up a powerful set of keyword lists you can work with further. |
| 1) Start Keyword Elite. | ![]() |
| 2) Step 1 should already be set to Create a keyword list. Cool. This is exactly what you need it. Leave that part and move on. | ![]() |
| 3) Enter a broad keyphrase here, one that describes your industry. Again, I've chosen to use insurance as my basic root keyword. | |
4) Now we need to tell Keyword Elite which places it should use to build the keyword list from. We want to set as many sources as possible. So check every box in this section EXCEPT Meta Tags, KeywordDiscovery or WordTracker. |
|
| 5) I love this part of Keyword Elite. Set how many keywords you would like the software to dig out here. I'd recommend trying it at 1000 first. It can bring back way more, but things can get a little TOO long. For this example, set the slider to 1000. | ![]() |
| 6) Click on OK and then click on the Reports Tab. Here you'll get to see your Keyword List being built up. If I were you I'd take care of some other business and leave the software running. It will run happily in the background and will build up a HUGE list for you to work with. | |

4) Now we need to tell Keyword Elite which places it should use to build the keyword list from. We want to set as many sources as possible. So check every box in this section EXCEPT Meta Tags, KeywordDiscovery or WordTracker.
