Keyword Tool Buyer Blog

16th March 2007
I've built a keyword list - now what?
I got a great question from one of my website's visitors today that I thought I'd re-post on my blog here:

I'm very new to PPC advertisement, and I have a question that might sound really stupid to you:

Once I managed to build it up, what shall I do with my super huge keyword list?

(probably I cant afford to bid on each keyword?)

Thanks for your help,

Karolina

Hello Karolina

Thanks for the email. And there's really no stupid questions. ;-)

I think the first thing you have to do is to spend some time getting rid of the keywords in the list that either aren't relevant or would attract low quality buyers. An obvious one I start with is the word 'free'. Lots of surfers are searching for free versions of all kinds of stuff and those people don't convert very well.

What you want to do is to end up with keyword lists that are really focused, relevant to your market, and cover as many different ways of saying something that you can come up with. It's amazing how many different ways your potential buyers will all search for the same thing! ;-)

The next thing you need to do with a large keyword list is to break it up into smaller keyword lists, where each one has a closely related theme. If you were building up keywords for a site that sold engine parts, you'd want to create one list for 'auto parts' and another for 'car parts'.

Some people use a spreadsheet for this. Others use a simple text editor. I use Notetab for this. It's free (the lite version) and you can get it at http://www.notetab.com

Tightly focused groups of keywords will convert into sales much better in PPC engines such as Adwords and Yahoo too. And doing thorough research into keywords (using your own vocabulary AND a keyword tool) will mean you actually pay less for your clicks.

So, in short, get rid of the junk and then organize and structure your keyword lists into short, super-targeted groups.

All the best,

Tom
