Wordtracker Review    By Tom Armstrong

Although a bit trickier than some tools, Wordtracker is a powerful keyword research software that can build up really in-depth, profitable keyword lists you can't get anywhere else.

What does this software do? WordTracker is an online service that offers a number of different tools to help you dig out large, thorough keyword lists. It offers a popularity score for each keyphrase and a way to store and expand your keyword lists online.
Initial notes It seems strange writing a review of WordTracker as it's a service that I've been using for years. I don't use all of the features available because there's a huge depth of different things you can do. But at it's basic level you can build up massive important keyword lists quickly.
Buying notes There's 4 options for buying. The 1 day version is great for trying the service out. The yearly subscription works out the cheapest overall. Once you've paid, you get instant access to the service by way of a username and password you use to log in. It's all very straight forward stuff. I choose the yearly option because it works out cheaper overall.
First impressions When you log into WordTracker you are confronted with a simple (but colourful) panel that gives you access to it's different keyword building tools. It's a little overwhelming at first but don't be afraid to click on the links and follow the guides. Each section has very simple explanations of what goes on there.

WordTracker pays off the more you learn about it. The most basic and powerful keyword search you'll want to use is the Keyword Universe. This where you can search for 1 or more phrases and WordTracker will build you huge lists based around them.
What I liked Uses it's own database

The good thing about WordTracker is that they maintain their own database of most-often-searched words. And beside each keyword Wordtracker digs out for you, you'll see their own score of how popular it is. The real benefit is that you'll be able to dig out phrases with WordTracker that you just won't get with other tools.

Digging for keywords

Another really great feature with WordTracker is that you can keep digging and digging for keywords. What do I mean by that? Let's say you search for 'car parts'. Wordtracker brings back a huge list of 300 phrases containing car parts. Things like:

used car parts
classic car parts
custom car parts

You can then search on one of those phrases. For example 'used car parts'. This brings back another list with really drilled down phrases like:

alero custom car parts
custom car parts accessories
cal custom car parts

The keyword basket

One thing that saves a lot of time with Wordtracker is that once you've made your search, you can click on the phrases that are returned (they're all links). This stores them in your keywords basket. When you're done choosing the words you want to keep you can export them easily and work on them in Excel or your text editor.

Lateral and thesaurus searches

Another great tool that's part of WordTracker's Keyword Universe is the Lateral and Thesaurus search. Say you put 'car parts' into this search tool. It will bring back loads of results such as:

auto parts
accessories
performance parts
brakes
auto accessories

This takes a lot of work off you coming up with variations for keyphrases and will help you get phrases you might have missed. Clicking on these keyphrases runs a full search on them (described in the previous point) and the keyword lists you can build up are HUGE.

Stacks of other tools and options

This is just the basic searches I'm talking about. WordTracker will keep giving you surprises the more you use it and learn about it. If I mention it all, this review will spill on for another zillion pages. Suffice to say that WordTracker offers a really great range of tools and very good value for money.

Really fast results

You'd think an online service would run slower than a software based application, right? Well the surprising thing about this product is that it brings back your keyword research instantly. There's no delays, no waiting. As soon as you hit the submit button, you'll get loads and loads of keywords back straight away.
What I didn't like 300 keyphrases per search limit

When you do a search on Wordtracker for a keyphrase, the maximum number of phrases that are returned is 300. This is fine for phrases where there's less than 300 results. But when it's a really popular phrase, it would be nice to see below the 300th line. You can of course take any phrase in that list and perform a separate search on it.

Steeper learning curve to get the most out of it

Although you can use the simple searches on WordTracker, to get the most out of it you should expect to spend a little time learning about the software. Fortunately there's really good Help Documentation available with WordTracker. So don't let this put you off. There's a really rich tool here.

No way to do country specific searches

Perhaps I've missed this but I've never been able to find a way to search for say how many people in the UK are searching for my keyphrases. This is obviously a huge drawback if you're wanting data on specific markets around the world.
Strengths
  • Uses it's own highly accurate database
  • Offers really rich, deep keyword research tools
  • Build a keyword list online with Keyword Basket
  • Faster than just about any tool out there
  • Lots of powerful ways to search for phrases
Weaknesses
  • Only brings back 300 keyphrases at a time
  • Takes some practice for new users
  • Can't do country specific searches
The verdict WordTracker is a simply fantastic tool for doing keyword research. It's hard to imagine anyone serious about keyword research doing without it. I know that sounds like sales talk but this really is such a great asset when you're trying to compete in any market online.

Give the one day trial thing a go and see what you think. I've renewed my subscription to WordTracker year after year and it's paid for itself a hundred times over.
Refund details WordTracker comes with a 30 day money back guarantee. There's no questions asked if you want your money back.
